NOAA Increases Average Hurricane Season Storms to Reflect Most Recent Climate Record

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the number of storms in an average hurricane season will increase with this year’s outlook. Researchers from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center will now use the most recent 30-year period of record (1991-2020) in its hurricane season outlooks, which will increase the average number of named storms and hurricanes. The updated averages for the Atlantic hurricane season will be 14 named storms and 7 hurricanes, increasing from the average 12 named storms and 6 hurricanes based on the period from 1981 to 2010. The average for major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5) will remain unchanged at 3.

“This update allows our meteorologists to make forecasts for the hurricane season with the most relevant climate statistics taken into consideration,” said Michael Farrar, director of NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction, in a media release.

NOAA said the increase reflects a very busy period of Atlantic hurricane activity over the last 30 years and may be due to the warming ocean and atmosphere, which are influenced by climate change. NOAA will issue its seasonal outlook for the 2021 hurricane season in late May.

Are Your Clients Prepared for Hurricane Season?

The best time to talk to your clients about flood insurance is before hurricane season strikes. Flood damage is not covered by traditional homeowners and property policies, leaving 80% of property owners unprotected. Yet even minor flooding can cause major damage, with an inch of water potentially costing tens of thousands of dollars.

Private flood solutions offer higher limits, broader coverages and more stable and competitive rates than what is available from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). With over 25 years of industry-leading expertise, Tokio Marine Highland provides a wide range of innovative private flood solutions to ensure the right coverage for your insureds this hurricane season.

Insurance Careers Month: Lydia Martinez, Senior Underwriter

February is Insurance Careers Month, and it has never been a better time to consider the exciting opportunities available in our diverse, innovative and growing industry. As a recipient of Business Insurance’s Best Places to Work in 2020, Tokio Marine Highland is creating a culture and environment where employees with diverse backgrounds and skill sets can thrive and grow their careers.

Here’s why Lydia Martinez, Senior Underwriter, chose a career in insurance:

Why did you choose a career in insurance?

Some would call it destiny or fate, and some have even told me I was meant to do this. However, the truth is that I stumbled into insurance during my sophomore year in high school. It was a great way to make some extra cash after school and learn skills that I knew would help me in the future (little did I know how important the skill set would become!).

I worked my way through college and earned a position as a private client account manager for one of the area’s largest independent agencies. I graduated Florida International University with a degree in criminal justice and the intent of pursuing a career in insurance fraud investigation with the Florida Division of Investigative and Forensic Services. However, after graduating, the insurance agency I was with was acquired by a leading North American insurance brokerage where I was promoted to Business Development Executive. I was honored to be the youngest and only female producer on the team, and the recipient of the top producer award at an offsite training academy sponsored by the brokerage.

My time in different roles within a large agency, and then for a national brokerage, taught me an invaluable number of skills and expertise. I realized that the insurance industry was far from one-dimensional and the opportunities were limitless. So I decided to adjust the sails, pursue my 220-General Lines Property & Casualty License and additional designations that would help me continue to grow in the industry.

Then in 2008, I found Tokio Marine Highland, my home for the past 12 years. It was here where it further solidified what I already knew – the only thing that can hold you back is yourself! Just when I thought the industry had nothing new to teach me, it proved me wrong. I learned a new skill, became an expert in a new product line, further sharpened an existing skill set and was completely pushed out of my comfort zone. I went from being the face of the product, per say, to being completely behind the scenes – underwriting, analyzing, assessing risk, making decisions that impact loss ratios and profitability – and I found a new passion! The best way to explain it is that I found yet another branch of interest in this oak tree of an industry.

What do you find most interesting or rewarding about your role?

At this point in my career as a Senior Underwriter overseeing a team of Assistant Underwriters, the most rewarding thing is training and developing new and existing employees. I love learning what makes them tick, what motivates them, what their passions are, hearing a fresh perspective and having fruitful conversations on the direction of the industry and how we can make what we are doing even better! Being in a multi-faceted role, I also deeply enjoy marketing our products by way of leading agency training webinars and continuing education courses, while maintaining production and underwriting responsibilities.

The most rewarding thing about my role is that it fulfills my creative side and my analytical side, allowing me an opportunity to find the missing link to solving a problem or reaching a solution that requires out-of-the-box thinking. Those moments remind me why this is my passion, why it drives me, and motivates me to continue pursuing ways to challenge myself and grow in my profession.

For someone who may have never considered the insurance industry for a career, what would you say to change their minds?

Simply put, don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Everyone needs insurance and this industry offers you options – marketing, sales, underwriting, operations, financial services, risk management, claims, information technology, analytics, and the list goes on and on! Yes, the industry has been around for a long time and, to me, that equates to strength, stability, and the opportunity to open doors for the next generation of insurance professionals.

Insurance Careers Month: Tim Reilly, Senior Director of Digital Distribution

Photo of Tim Reilly.February is Insurance Careers Month, and it has never been a better time to consider the exciting opportunities available in our diverse, innovative and growing industry. As a recipient of Business Insurance’s Best Places to Work in 2020, Tokio Marine Highland is creating a culture and environment where employees with diverse backgrounds and skillsets can thrive and grow their careers. Here’s why Tim Reilly, Senior Director of Digital Distribution, chose a career in insurance:

Why did you choose a career in insurance?

Like a number of people in our industry, I kind of just fell into it. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after college and thought law school might be in the books. I wasn’t excited about the idea of jumping right back into school, and I also received some advice that a couple years of work experience might be helpful. I had been doing some advisory work on a political campaign and when that ended I needed to find something. I took the first offer I received, and it happened to be with a large global insurance company. I started in claims, but once I was in the door, I quickly realized there were so many different avenues to take within the insurance space. I quickly became an insurance nerd and wanted to learn everything I could about our industry and haven’t looked back.

What do you find most interesting or rewarding about your role?

The insurance industry has been slow to adopt technology, but that has changed significantly over the last couple of years and it has made it an exciting time to be in our space. I love that every day is an opportunity to solve problems, bring new types of solutions and value to our clients, and utilize technology to create new partnership opportunities in the market. I also love that every day is an opportunity to learn something new.

For someone who may have never considered the insurance industry for a career, what would you say to change their minds?

The opportunities to make a real impact in our space are endless. Like other industries, change is inevitable, and there is a real opportunity in insurance to shape what that change looks like. The industry is in need of new ideas, fresh perspectives and those who are willing to challenge existing technology and business structures. It’s important not to lose sight of what our industry is here for. What you are doing is meaningful. We exist to help bring people and businesses peace of mind, but most importantly, help restore when the unexpected happens.

Insurance Careers Month: Justin Moseley, Assistant Vice President, Underwriter Manager

February is Insurance Careers Month, and it has never been a better time to consider the exciting opportunities available in our diverse, innovative and growing industry. As a recipient of Business Insurance’s Best Places to Work in 2020, Tokio Marine Highland is creating a culture and environment where employees with diverse backgrounds and skillsets can thrive and grow their careers. Here’s why Justin Moseley, Assistant Vice President and Underwriting Manager, chose a career in insurance:

Why did you choose a career in insurance?

I had an inspirational teacher in college who previously had been a lawyer for the special investigations unit of an insurance company, and had some great stories that really drew me into considering insurance as a career. He sealed the deal when he told me the Risk Management and Insurance program at the University of Georgia had 100% placement rate for their graduates!

What do you find most interesting or rewarding about your role?

I have an analytical mind and love to solve problems. Underwriting an account is like trying to piece together a puzzle and we all know the feeling of putting that last piece in place! As I’ve grown throughout my career, another thing I’ve come to love is teaching and mentoring the next generation of insurance professionals. It is so rewarding to watch someone blossom into a top-tier member of the team and to know that I was able to play a role in their success.

For someone who may have never considered the insurance industry for a career, what would you say to change their minds?

Insurance sounds nerdy and boring, but in reality, it is a very diverse and interesting industry. There are so many areas of the industry, from marketing to technology, finance to underwriting, human resources to data and analytics. And, these roles are spread across insurance carriers, managing general agents (MGA’s), brokers, retail agents and reinsurers.

I’ve also been to many awesome places thanks to insurance industry. The pinnacle of which was a trip to London to visit Lloyd’s!

5 Reasons to Consider a Career in Insurance

February is Insurance Careers Month, and it has never been a better time to consider the exciting opportunities available in our diverse, innovative and growing industry.

Did you know that despite the essential role that the insurance industry plays in our global economy, the U.S. is facing a talent shortage? In fact, the median age of the workforce in the insurance industry is the oldest among all areas of the financial services sector, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And with as many as a quarter of the insurance industry’s baby boomers entering retirement in the coming years, companies will be looking to fill hundreds of thousands of jobs.

With the emergence of new markets and rapid advancements in technologies such as A.I. and blockchain, the insurance industry looks much different today than it did decades ago. Whether you are a college student preparing to enter the workforce or looking to pivot your career path and enter a new industry, there are many reason to consider insurance.

As a recipient of Business Insurance’s Best Places to Work in 2020, Tokio Marine Highland is creating a culture and environment where employees with diverse backgrounds and skillsets can thrive and grow their careers. Here’s five reasons why you should consider a career in insurance with Tokio Marine Highland:

1. Apply your technology skills and be at the forefront of solving tomorrow’s problems. A common misconception is that insurance industry is only for underwriters, risk managers and claims handlers. With the current COVID environment, shifting customer expectations, and changing demographics, today’s insurance companies are searching for employees to fill a variety of roles as they seek digital opportunities and become more tech-enabled. At Tokio Marine Highland, we’re embracing an insurtech mindset and building a start-up culture with a focus on innovative technology and data-driven decisioning that will be instrumental in moving our business forward and driving our digital transformation. We’re seeking individuals who are impactful players and curious problem solvers who can help us reimagine and reinvent our industry to maximize the value for our customers.

2. Be a part of a Good Company. Insurance plays a critical role in our society. Whether it is a fire, flood, accident or natural disaster, our industry is there to truly help people affected by a tragedy by quickly resolving claims, restoring businesses and getting them back on their feet. It’s all part of the “Good Company” philosophy we embrace at Tokio Marine Highland. As part of the Tokio Marine Group, we strive “To Be a Good Company,” meaning we do right by our customers, our communities and our colleagues.

This is underpinned by our values (Empowerment, Inclusion, Integrity, Excellence, Innovation and Collaboration). We don’t simply pay lip service, we meet monthly to discuss how we can best live our values daily. We empower employees to make decisions and try new things, and we make sure they are recognized when they do, whether they succeed or not.

3. Work with diverse teams where employees are encouraged to be there authentic selves. At Tokio Marine Highland, inclusion is one of our core values. We believe in the importance of fostering a culture of inclusion and mutual respect, where all employees are valued and encouraged to be their authentic selves. We understand that our greatest advantage is our people, and that by harnessing the power of a diverse and inclusive workforce, we can bring incredible value to not only our clients, but to each other. We celebrate our differences and embrace the unique experiences and perspectives that drive innovation and create an environment that attracts, excites, and retains exceptional people.

4. Experience teamwork and hands-on training from industry experts. Collaboration is a core value at Tokio Marine Highland, and with our approximately 240 employees located across the U.S., it is critically important that we find ways to engage and foster teamwork as an organization in building a One TMH culture. For our employees, that’s starts on day one. New employees are paired with veterans and benefit from hands-on training and mentorship. We want our employees to not only develop their skills, we want to provide a rewarding path for growing their careers.

5. Have fun and give back to your communities. Most importantly, we make work fun. Whether that’s through regular team outings, costume contests, holiday parties or community service projects, we want our employees to look forward to coming to the office every day. And as we continue to grow, we will never lose sight of what matters most – creating an atmosphere of togetherness, passion and family, where all employees are a valued member of our team.
